Like Music Festivals? This Year Portugal’s Packed with ’Em!

For such a small country, Portugal boasts a muito grande menu of awesome allures for visitors – capital Lisbon and the Algarve, of course, as well as the magical castles and manses of Sintra; the dreamy isle of Madeira; the bucolic inland Alentejo (including its wine country); historic Coimbra and Porto; and various other beaches in spots like Nazaré, Figueira da Foz, and the Costa da Caparica near Lisbon.

But if partying and pop or electronic/house/trance music are also your vibe, you might be excited to learn that Portugal has you covered and then some – for example, just this spring alone, three major milestones on the EDM circuit:

Sónar 2022 Lisboa, 8-10 April
Woo hoo! This iconic Barcelona festival is making its Portuguese debut with three days and two nights of electronica, visual arts, and “digital culture” with dozens of internationally known artists such as Charlotte de Witte, Floating Points, Honey Dijon, and Thundercat.

Secret Project Festival, 17-19 June
A couple of months later, the action switches south to the Algarve, when the resort city of Portimão hosts Portugal’s first edition of the annual event which has been packing ‘em in in Los Angeles for the past several years now with the edgiest underground dance music, street and digital art. More than 70 acts on three stages, with the beach at your feet – what a blast!

Rock in Río Lisboa 2022, 18-19 and 25-26 June
Since starting in Rio de Janeiro in 1985, this legendary blockbuster has also had eight editions in Lisbon, the last one four years ago. And the ninth time around won’t disappoint, with headliners like Black-Eyed Peas, Foo Fighters and legacy acts like A-Ha and Duran Duran, among many, many others.
